Prepping for a no-stress summer

Summer in all its glory is almost upon us – sunshine, beach days, school vacation…All of these summer joys are fun and exciting, but they also require a certain amount of planning. How much vacation time should I take off of work? Should I make trip reservations somewhere? What are the kids going to do?

Summertime can definitely live up to its fun and carefree reputation, but to do that it needs some help from you. If you think ahead to address the major logistic questions in advance, then the vacation months can be all about enjoying the warm weather with your friends and family.

The first thing to decide is whether you’re taking a vacation. If so, what is your budget? Are you flying somewhere far away or taking a road trip to somewhere nearby? How long will your trip be? Answering these questions will take care of a lot of your planning. Once you know your vacation plan you can set aside money, ask for time off of work, and book reservations. You can also shop for your vacation in advance, getting sunglasses, sunscreen, bathing suits, and other essentials before the last-minute panic sets in.

If you have kids, the other big thing to decide is what their summer will look like. If you have older teenagers summertime is a bit easier, as they can take more responsibility for themselves than younger children can. They may need help learning how to apply for jobs or finding volunteer opportunities, but they are also more self-sufficient. For younger children, consider whether there are local summer camps to enroll them in or nanny arrangements to make.

Summertime should be a time to unwind, soak up the sun, and de-stress; however, sometimes logistics do their best to derail summer fun. With a little forethought, you and your family can enjoy all the best from the summer months without any of the worry. Surf’s up!
